Marcelo Maciel Ramos is Professor at the Faculty of Law

of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in

Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where he teaches courses and supervises researches at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He has a Ph.D. degree in Law from UFMG, having performed part of his doctoral researches at the Institut de la Pensée Contemporaine of Université Paris-Diderot. Currently, he has been investigating the cultural construction of the idea of liberty, its contradictions and the obstacles for its actual realization. Pushing beyond the abstract and theoretical foundations of the concept, a critical analysis is proposed in face of the actual circumstances of groups for whom freedom is not a possibility. This current investigation seeks to understand how and in what extension poverty, social inequality, gender and sexuality constitutes elements of oppression and impediments for the fruition of liberties.
